Yesterday (09 October 2024), the Executive Mayor of Vhembe District, Councillor Tsakani Freda Nkondo, along with officials from the Technical Department, removed illegal water connections in Gumbani Village.
These illegal connections, caused by so-called “water mafias,” have been affecting water supplies to nearby villages.
The municipality said this action follows a recent meeting with local traditional leaders and community members. During this meeting, Mayor Nkondo promised to address the problem of illegal water connections.
She emphasized that access to water is a basic human right, and these illegal connections are unfairly impacting the community’s access to clean water.
The municipality stated that, “The removal of these connections is an important step toward restoring proper water access for the surrounding villages”.
