A 24-year-old suspect made an appearance before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court today, facing charges related to the murder of his 21-year-old girlfriend.
The arrest unfolded after the Giyani Police discovered the lifeless body of the young woman in the nearby bushes of Gawula village outside Giyani on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
According to Police, the suspect, identified as the deceased’s boyfriend, voluntarily approached the Community Services Center at the police station.
He confessed to the crime, revealing that he had killed his girlfriend and left her body in the Gawula village bushes.
Providing contact numbers of a witness to the incident, the suspect guided the police to the crime scene.
The K-9 Unit, promptly summoned, successfully recovered the body upon arrival.
Preliminary investigations unveiled that the suspect and the deceased were in a relationship.
The 24-year-old suspect is a current college student in Free State, while the deceased, Nyikiwe Maranda Chauke (21), was enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and resided in Gawula village.
The motive behind the tragic incident remains unknown, but Giyani Police Spokesman Sergeant Ridgewell Rikhotso acknowledged the possibility of domestic violence being a factor.

The suspect’s case has been postponed until Tuesday, January 16, 2024, for the arrangement of legal representation.
