Malamulele -The police in Vhembe District carried out a successful joint operation on Sunday, 31st December 2023, apprehending six male suspects involved in illegal mining activities at Muchipisi village, near Malamulele.
Officials from both Vhembe and Mopani Districts’ Anti Illegal Mining Task Teams collaborated in Operation Vala Umgodi, leading to the arrest of individuals aged between 18 and 44 years old.
According to the police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, The suspects were caught red-handed, unlawfully excavating and processing precious metals at an unauthorized mining site.

“Police confiscated various mining equipment used during the illegal activities, including spades, a shovel, hammers, a wheelbarrow, pendukas, an alpha motor, picks, and fan belts,” said Police Spokesperson Mashaba.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that four of the suspects lacked proper documentation as foreign nationals,” Mashaba added.
The arrested individuals are scheduled to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 02 January 2024, to face charges related to their illegal mining involvement.
