In a surprising and controversial appointment, Kgabo Mahoai has been named the new MEC for Treasury in Limpopo. Mahoai, formerly the Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), was dismissed in September 2021 for his role in a scandal involving R118 million in irregular expenditure.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s statement from 2021 made it clear, “Mahoai was let go following the conclusion of a disciplinary case against him. The charges stemmed from a failed project to purchase land in New York for South Africa’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the New York Consulate.”
The ambitious plan to construct premises never materialized, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill for the unexecuted project.
DIRCO’s statement at the time emphasized the gravity of the issue, citing the irregular expenditure incurred on what ultimately proved to be an unsuccessful venture. The R118 million wasted on the New York land deal was a significant blow, raising questions about accountability and oversight within the department.
Mahoai’s new role as MEC for Treasury in Limpopo has sparked widespread debate. Critics argue that his past mismanagement of funds makes him a questionable choice for such a critical financial position.
The residents of Limpopo fear that his track record might indicate future risks for Limpopo’s financial health. however, Some Resident stated that “he has the experience necessary for the job and he should be given a second chance. Since he has served in various governmental roles and bring a wealth of knowledge to the Treasury”
As Kgabo Mahoai steps into his new position, Limpopo residents and political analysts alike will be watching closely. The province’s financial future now rests, in part, on the shoulders of a man who once lost his job over a financial scandal.
Whether this new chapter will bring redemption or further controversy remains to be seen.
