The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has defended its decision to nominate Dr John Hlophe to serve on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). The National Assembly recently elected Dr Hlophe and several other MPs to the JSC.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) strongly objected to his nomination, citing his impeachment for gross misconduct as a primary reason. The DA argues that appointing Hlophe undermines the integrity of the judiciary, given his past impeachment by the National Assembly.
DA Chief Whip George Michalakis stated, “We are strongly of the view that it is neither reasonable nor rational to elect Dr Hlophe as a member of the National Assembly on the Judicial Service Commission.”
Michalakis also stated that, “Parliament has a constitutional obligation to protect the judiciary’s independence, impartiality, and effectiveness.”
Despite the objections, the MK Party stands by its decision, insisting that Dr Hlophe is a suitable candidate for the role.
