Mayor Shadrack Maluleke of Collins Chabane Municipality launched the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign at Xigamani village on Wednesday 29 November. The campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize the community to take action against gender-based violence and child abuse.
The 16 Days of Activism campaign is a global initiative that runs from November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10th, International Human Rights Day. During this period, communities around the world come together to advocate for the rights of women and children, and to promote a society free from violence.
In his address, Mayor Maluleke emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the issue of violence against women and children. He stated, “Sixteen Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is a moment for all of us to reaffirm our commitment to reclaim our streets and create a society that is safe and secure for women and children.”
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that affects countless families, often leaving victims traumatized and trapped in a cycle of abuse. Mayor Maluleke stressed that domestic violence should not be left solely to families to resolve.
He called for the full force of the law to be applied to perpetrators, stating, “An uncle who rapes a niece needs to face the full might of the law. Once a crime has been committed, let us allow the law to take its course.”
The launch of the campaign in Xigamani village signifies the municipality’s dedication to addressing gender-based violence and child abuse at the grassroots level. By engaging the community, Mayor Maluleke hopes to foster a sense of collective responsibility and empower individuals to take action against violence.
He emphasized the importance of reporting incidents and seeking help, stating, “Silence only perpetuates the cycle of violence. We must break this silence and stand together against any form of abuse.”
The launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign in Collins Chabane Municipality marks a significant step towards creating a safer and more inclusive society for women and children.
Mayor Maluleke’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence and child abuse is commendable, and it is hoped that this campaign will inspire other municipalities to take similar action.
