On Thursday, July 4, 2024, a 29-year-old man, Ceasman Dala Chauke, was found guilty by the Thohoyandou High Court in the Vhembe District for the murder of his girlfriend. The tragic incident took place in Dzingi Dzingi village, located in the Giyani Mopani District.
The court heard that on Saturday, April 8, 2023, the victim was walking with her cousin and a friend from a nearby tavern when Chauke, who was also the father of her child, approached her.
An argument broke out between them, leading Chauke to assault the victim. The friend went to the victim’s house to report the incident, leaving the cousin at the scene.
The cousin tried to intervene but was overpowered and assaulted by Chauke. She eventually left the victim with the suspect. Chauke then attacked the victim with stones, leaving her unconscious.
When the friend returned with the victim’s brother, they found her in critical condition and rushed her to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries.
The police were informed, and a murder investigation was initiated, led by Sergeant Shirandiwa Anastacia Vuma. Through her diligent efforts, Chauke was arrested on Monday, April 10, 2023, in Jilongo village. Despite being granted bail, Chauke was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
This sentence brings some closure to the victim’s family and highlights the serious consequences of such violent actions.
