Limpopo’s MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, spoke about the improvements and ongoing challenges in local governance.
Speaking to staff at the department offices in Polokwane on Friday, Makamu highlighted that among the 27 municipalities in the province, 18 have achieved unqualified audit opinions, eight have qualified opinions, and one has an adverse opinion.
Despite these mixed audit results, Makamu emphasized that most municipalities are now better at following and complying with legislation.
He also addressed issues within the Traditional Affairs department, pointing out the instability in the Bapedi Kingdom, the Balobedu Queenship, and the Vhavenda Kingdom. “These challenges are mainly due to disputes among families in senior traditional leadership roles,” Stated MEC Makamu.
Makamu assured that efforts to improve service delivery and strengthen local governance capacity will continue, despite the hurdles faced.
