In a heated debate within Parliament, Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, pointed fingers at former President Jacob Zuma for the country’s soaring budget deficit and mounting debt.
Godongwana did not mince words, attributing the financial woes directly to what he described as “state capture” under Zuma’s leadership.
“What happened, which members of [the] MK Party can’t accept, is that state capture crept in, led by their president,” Godongwana asserted.
The MK Party, expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to provide free education and the alarming rate of unemployment among black graduates.
However, Godongwana countered by highlighting the enormous bailouts—totaling R520 billion—that state-owned enterprises received during the years of state capture.
“Where did that money come from? It was cutting R60 billion from the police, R247 billion from health and education, R40 billion from the army, by their leader. He was overseeing it,” Godongwana emphasized.
