The family of former finance minister and Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni has announced his passing at the age of 65.
Mboweni died on Saturday night in a Johannesburg hospital after a brief illness, with his loved ones by his side.
Mboweni made history as the first Black governor of the South African Reserve Bank, serving from 1999 to 2009. Before that, he held the role of labour minister in Nelson Mandela’s cabinet.
In 2018, he returned to politics when President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed him as finance minister, a position he held until his retirement in August 2021.
The Mboweni family has requested privacy as they cope with their loss and stated that more details will be shared soon.
