A heated debate has sparked in South Africa’s Parliament regarding the country’s national symbols, particularly the anthem and the flag. The controversy arose during discussions on the budget of the Sport, Arts, and Culture Department.
EFF MP Fana Mokoena criticized the decision to retain parts of the old national anthem, stating that “Die Stem” should be removed as it is offensive.
Mokoena emphasized the need for a symbol of unity that reflects the current South Africa without divisive elements.
In response, McKenzie, representing the opposing view, argued that reconciliation requires compromise and that efforts to erase history should be resisted.
He accused the EFF of showboating and asserted that South Africa has moved forward, leaving behind divisive elements of the past.
Peace Mabe, McKenzie’s deputy, supported his stance, emphasizing that South Africa’s history cannot be rewritten to satisfy specific interests.
