The Democratic Alliance (DA) has stated that it will only join the African National Congress (ANC)’s proposed government of national unity if three specific parties are excluded.
The DA insists that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) must not be part of the unity government.
This announcement follows ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration of his party’s intention to form a broad coalition with various opposition parties. The ANC has set strict criteria for participation in this proposed government.
DA national spokesperson Werner Horn emphasized the need for more details on the government’s operation. “The President was not very specific in terms of the characteristics of such a government of national unity,”
“We will hopefully get some more detail from them, and then the duty of that negotiating team will be to bring the specifics back to the federal executive,” said Horn.
He added that the DA’s Federal Council would decide on their participation next Monday. However, Horn cautioned that any inclusion of the three named parties would make it very difficult, if not impossible, for the DA to be part of the government of national unity.
