GIYANI – A horrific incident in Giyani shook the community as a 43-year-old man brutally stabbed his girlfriend to death and wounded another person who tried to intervene.
The tragic event unfolded when the victim sought refuge at a friend’s house due to domestic issues with her partner.
The suspect gained entry into the house, still under construction, and unleashed a brutal attack on the woman, despite the owner’s attempts to stop him.
According to the police Spokesperson in Limpopo Hlulani Mashaba, the suspect also injured a community member who bravely stepped in to help.
“The victim, identified as Esther Machavi, tragically lost her life, while the injured man was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba.
“The suspect, apprehended at his residence in Vuhehli Village, tried to evade justice by attempting suicide during his arrest but was stopped and taken to the hospital before being discharged and detained by the local Police Station,” Mashaba added.
Mashaba continues to say “Police seized a knife believed to be the weapon used in the crime,”
Facing charges of murder and attempted murder, the suspect is scheduled to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on December 8, 2023.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe emphasized the importance of seeking professional help in times of relationship issues, condemning violence as a solution and emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing as the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident.
