The police in Giyani have launched a murder investigation after the lifeless body of 21-year-old Nyikiwe Maranda Chauke was discovered in the nearby bushes of Gawula village on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
The suspect, identified as a 24-year-old resident of the same village and reportedly the boyfriend of the deceased, voluntarily approached the Community Services Center (CSC) at the local police station to confess to the crime.
According to the Spokesperson of Giyani Police Ridgewell Rikhotso, the suspect provided the police with contact numbers for a witness who saw the incident unfold and agreed to guide them to the crime scene.
“Swiftly responding to the information, the police summoned the K-9 Unit, which, accompanied by the witness, successfully recovered the victim’s body at the scene,” Said Rikhotso.
Preliminary investigations suggest that both the suspect and the deceased were in a romantic relationship, attending different colleges in Free State and TUT, respectively.
While the motive for the tragic killing remains unknown, Giyani Police Spokesman Sergeant Rikhotso indicated that domestic violence could not be ruled out.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 15, 2024.
