A 16-year-old boy was arrested in Thomo village, Giyani, on Tuesday night, June 18, 2024, for possessing an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property. The incident occurred around 23:45 when police, while on patrol, received a tip-off about a teenager seen walking to his residence.
Limpopo spokespersons colonel Ledwaba Malesela stated that “Following the lead, police arrived at a house in Thomo village and found the suspect with his mother. Upon questioning the boy about the firearm, he denied having one.
“However, a search of the house uncovered live ammunition, a bundle of cellphone airtimes, seven cellphones, and an unlicensed firearm hidden in the roof,” said Colonel Ledwaba.
The 16-year-old, who is a Grade 8 learner, could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the items. “He was immediately arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property.,” added Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The minor has since been released under parental supervision, with arrangements being made for a Probation Officer to be involved.
He is expected to make his first appearance at the Giyani Magistrate Court soon. Police investigations are ongoing.
